Caring for the baby

  1. 1Wash hands well with soap before pampering the baby.
  2. 2The bandage should stay in place for at least 24 hours. If it falls off earlier and there is no bleeding, that’s okay.
  3. 3The bandage should unravel and fall off on its own — either during the bath, or sometime after 24 hours.
  4. 4Diapers following the bris may be tinged red. This is normal and not a cause for concern.
  5. 5For the first 24 hours, apply ointment around the original bandage on the penis. Do not remove or replace the original bandage.
  6. 6Later on the day of the bris, or the next day: bathe the baby in warm water, gently pouring water directly over the bandage. (If the umbilical cord has not yet fallen off, bathe just the lower half of the body.)
  7. 7If the bandage gets dirty, gently bathe the baby until the bandage is clean.
